Abstract

Human action recognition has been an important topic in computer vision due to its many applications such as video surveillance, human machine interaction and video retrieval. One core problem behind these applications is automatically recognizing low-level actions and high-level activities of interest. The former is usually the basis for the latter. This survey gives an overview of the most recent advances in human action recognition during the past several years, following a well-formed taxonomy proposed by a previous survey. From this state-of-the-art survey, researchers can view a panorama of progress in this area for future research.

Action Recognition in Videos: from Motion Capture Labs to the Web
This paper presents a survey of human action recognition approaches based on visual data recorded from a single video camera. We propose an organizing framework which puts in evidence the evolution of the area. The proposed organization is based on the representation used as input for the recognition task.

Going Deeper into Action Recognition: A Survey
Over the last decade, human action analysis evolved from earlier schemes that were often limited to controlled environments to advanced solutions that can apply to almost all daily activities. Understanding human actions in visual data is tied to advances in object recognition, human dynamics, domain adaptation and semantic segmentation.

Review of Action Recognition and Detection Methods
Action recognition refers to the act of classifying an action that is present in a given video. Action detection involves locating actions of interest in space and/or time. Videos contain photometric information that can assist in identifying the action that has been imaged.

Depth2Action: Exploring Embedded Depth for Large-Scale Action Recognition
This paper performs the first investigation into depth for large-scale human action recognition in video. We develop a new framework called depth2action and experiment into how best to incorporate the depth information. We also propose modified depth motion maps to capture the subtle temporal changes in depth.
